Hilary Haskell
Garden Grove’s Outstanding Teen 2007

Hilary is a fourteen-year-old high school freshman and is a cheerleader, honors student and a member of the Key Club.

Hilary is very involved with her community and with Girl Scouts.  She has earned her Bronze and Silver Awards, and is currently working towards her Gold Award.  She has also been awarded the Presidential Community Service Award, was selected as the Orange County Finalist in the Prudential Spirit of Community Award, and was in the top ten percent of all finalists in the country for the Prudential Spirit of Community Award.

As well as helping the community, Hilary is also very interested in tap dancing.  She has danced since she was three and has loved it since the day she started.  She performs at many community events, as well as recitals.  She currently works as a dance teacher’s assistant, helping instruct younger children’s dance classes.

Hilary is also passionate about music.  She has been playing and taking private piano lessons for the past seven years.  She is classically trained and enjoys playing a variety of music, from classical, jazz, contemporary and rock.  She has participated in Guild Auditions for six years, scoring in the superior range each year.  She also plays for the Certificate of Merit Recitals.  She achieved excellent ratings and was invited to play at the Certificate of Merit Honors Recital.  At her eighth grade graduation, she was selected to play as part of the entertainment.  She also plays the guitar.  She is self taught through her knowledge and training in music theory.

In her free time, Hilary also enjoys surfing.  She has been surfing for three years and enjoys the thrill of catching a wave.

Hilary’s future goals include attending either a UC school or one of the Claremont Colleges.  She hopes to become a psychologist or an oceanographer.  Her ultimate goal is to own a business where she will design a line of surf clothing for girls.

Hilary is both proud and honored to be Garden Grove’s Outstanding Teen and is looking forward to serving her community.  She hopes to be a role model and inspiration to other young girls, as well as to promote her platform, “Helping the Homeless”, in the community throughout her year of service to the City of Garden Grove.
